Internships

A graduate student in bioengineering works in the lab.

Become An Industry Partner By Offering Paid Internships

The cornerstone of experiential learning for Designated Emphasis in Biotechnology Ph.D. students is the required 3-6 month industry/professional internship, which is a required course (DEB282). Students are keen to gain professional experiences that will build both technical skills and transferrable soft skills, enabling a broader range of career options upon graduation.

Internship projects are flexible in timing, location and topical focus, allowing students to explore a wide range of biotechnology-related careers. Partner feedback indicates that having access to creative, energetic Ph.D. students enables potentially transformative pilot studies and niche projects to take place within the context of a broader organizational research strategy.

The vast majority of students opt for industry internships, but some choose to work in government or non-profit research institutes, at teaching colleges and in cross-disciplinary academic environments.  With ~200 DEB students enrolled, we are always looking for new internships sites – please contact biotechprogram@ucdavis.edu if interested in participating.
