2017 BTP Trainees

Biomolecular Training Program (BTP)

2008 Biotech Students and Faculty
The Annual Biotech Program Training Retreat not only featured talks by industry partners and funded BTP trainees, but invited the entire Biotech Program and DEB Program communities to present their research during the poster sessions and take part in professional networking.  This group photo from the 2008 Retreat was snapped during a coffee break and features Sunny Shah (NIH Fellow, 2008-2010), Mindy Simon, Kavya Katipally, Lucas Arzola (CREATE-IGERT Trainee), Erica Andreozzi, Prof. Juan Medrano, Rashida Lathan (NIH Fellow, 2009-2010) and Karen Leung. Allison Dickey (NIH Fellow, 2005-2007) and Prof. David Segal are in the background.

An Innovative Model for Biotechnology Graduate Education (1990-2017): the Biomolecular Training Program (BTP)

Program History and Overview

In the early 1990s, the Biotechnology Program leadership team, Prof. Roy H. Doi and Dr. Martina Newell-McGloughlin, began envisioning new models of graduate education that would prepare doctoral students for career paths in both academia and the growing biotechnology industry.  Central to this vision was support for innovative research and training experiences that would enhance students understanding of the "business of biotech" and provide opportunities to engage with a variety of professionals working in translational research. The training goals of the Biotechnology Program aligned well with funding calls from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at that time, and the agency continues to support education and career development in several areas that overlap biotechnology disciplines, including biomedical and clinical research. Biotechnology Program faculty, brought together by Director Doi and Associate Director Newell-McGloughlin, launched the first NIH-funded graduate training program in biomolecular technology in 1990. Over the next ~20 years, Dr. Newell-McGloughlin continued to lead NIH grant-writing and program renewal efforts with the help of Biotechnology Program colleagues and faculty, leading to several awards, which were foundational for the development of the Biomolecular Training Program and Designated Emphasis in Biotechnology (DEB) doctoral degree program.

  • 1990 - 1999 NIH-NIGMS Training Program in Biomolecular Technology (T32, PI Roy Doi)
  • 1999 - 2002 Campus and Biotech Industry-supported Fellows
  • 2002 - 2007 NIH-NIGMS Training Program in Biomolecular Technology (T32 GM08799, PI Bruce Hammock)
  • 2007 - 2012 NIH-NIGMS Training Program in Biomolecular Technology  (T32 GM08799, PI Bruce Hammock)
  • 2012 - 2017 NIH-NIGMS Training Program in Biomolecular Technology  (T32 GM08799, PI Bruce Hammock [2012-2016], PI J. Kent Leach [2016-2017])

From the time of the first NIH T32 award in 1990, to the sunsetting of the Biomolecular Training Program in 2019, Biotechnology Program directors, including Prof. Doi (1990-1997), Dr. Newell-McGloughlin (1997-2002), Dr. Judy Kjelstrom (2002-2017) and Dr. Denneal Jamison-McClung (2017-2019), have acted as program coordinators for this highly interdisciplinary effort, working closely with the Biotechnology Program staff, NIH program officers, UC Davis research faculty and industry partners to ensure trainee success. Specific individuals involved in developing, leading and learning from the evolving iterations of the Biomolecular Training Program are listed below and may be found in the annual retreat program books (linked as pdfs in each section).

2009 Industry Partners
Industry partners from Monsanto - Calgene Campus, Dr. Alberto Iandolino (DEB Alumnus) and Dr. Martin Ruebelt, participated in the 2009 Annual Biotechnology Program Retreat, sharing the latest innovations in agricultural biotechnology and networking with students and faculty.

Key Role of Industry Partners

Biotech industry partners and other external organizations have been crucial to the success of the NIH BTP.  In particular, we are very grateful to the industry partners who sponsored First Year Fellows and Biotech Fellows during award periods and helped to bridge program support during a transitional period when NIH funding was not available (1999 - 2002). The industry and organizational partners listed below have supported our educational programs through one or more collaborative activities, including providing fellowship support, advisory committee service, writing letters of support, student mentorship, giving guest lectures and developing specialty courses (e.g. Novozymes scientists continue to guest lecture for the MIC292 elective course), hosting research site visits and hosting ~3-6 month student internships. In addition to the participants listed here, hundreds of UC Davis faculty trainers and industry internship mentors have participated in training activities over the years, for which we are deeply thankful. These individuals are highlighted in the linked program books below.

2010 Judy
Joining the program as Associate Director in 1998, Dr. Judy Kjelstrom took the lead on growing the newly formed DEB graduate program into a training powerhouse. Under her guidance, the DEB grew from about ten participating PhD students to its current steady-state of ~200 participants. Over the course of twenty years, "Dr. Judy" provided mentorship to hundreds of early career scientists and engineers, facilitating industry internship placements and encouraging an entrepreneurial "can do" spirit. In this photo, Dr. Judy has the 2010 Annual Biotechnology Program Retreat presentations on time and under control!  She continues to serve as the Biotechnology Program Director Emerita.

Creation of the Designated Emphasis in Biotechnology (DEB, 1997 - present)

The Designated Emphasis in Biotechnology graduate program was the result of Biotechnology Program leaders formalizing the coursework and professional training experiences developed through the earliest NIH training awards, at the recommendation of NIH reviewers and program officers.  The DEB has served as the formal graduate training vehicle for the NIH BTP, NSF CREATE-IGERT, and other federal training awards since its establishment in 1997.  DEB coursework includes an introduction to common platform technologies used in biotech-related research (e.g. bioprocessing, gene editing and cloning, DNA/protein sequencing and all of the 'omics [genomics, proteomics, metabolomics...], cell culture and tissue engineering, synthetic biology, novel biomaterials, drug discovery), bioethics and the "business of biotech" (e.g. intellectual property and innovation systems, regulatory affairs, entrepreneurship, project management, science communication for non-specialist audiences). Experiential learning in the form of team projects, networking events, company site visits and internships are essential components of the DEB graduate program. The DEB grew exponentially under the leadership of Dr. Judy Kjelstrom (2002-2018) and continues as a highly sought graduate training program  with ~200 students in 29 STEM disciplines under Dr. Denneal Jamison-McClung.

2008 Abhaya and Karen
Shown here at the 2008 Annual Biotechnology Program Retreat, Prof. Abhaya Dandekar (Plant Sciences) and Prof. Karen McDonald (Chemical Engineering) have been pivotal DEB faculty members and supporters of the Biotechnology Program, serving on the DEB Executive Committee, teaching DEB courses, securing extramural support for DEB students and mentoring countless undergraduates, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in biotechnology.
